4EVERKIN’s Office Assistant

By Alexus Colbert

I have not only been a member of 4EVERKIN for roughly 10 years, but I have also grown with them. Sara and Heather have been my mentors for what feels like forever, and they have always given me a sense of belonging.

Last November, I started working at 4EVERKIN as an office assistant. Working in the office makes me feel professional and hopeful about my future. I’m learning consistency by having a task to commit to every week, which also reflects on my parenting because consistency is a valuable parenting skill. I feel more responsible with handling tasks.

I started off unpacking deliveries and organizing the snack cart until I started making a slow but sure progression with my duties. Eventually, I made a restaurant reservation and started submitting research about upcoming events from around the community. Today, I write blog posts and content for 4EVERKIN as an author.

My mentors first offered me the position when they saw that I was in a tough spot financially. I have a daughter, and I do make ends meet, but sometimes it’s hard without having a job. So being an office assistant also gives me some money to look forward to that I use to support my kid.

Working in an office is fun. There’s always something to do. I learned how to use the shredder here, which can be addicting. I like the professionalism that I am learning and that my mentors are willing to help work around my schedule because I’ve worked from home a couple of times too.

Things are starting to look up for me now on the job market. I just finished a PCA (Personal Care Aide) training, and I’ll be working with my first client soon. I plan on continuing to write content for 4EVERKIN, whether it’s from home or in the office.
